City Tours

There are lots of tours of the city that you can take either on foot, by bus, boat or plane. A pretty comprehensive list is given below.

Walking Wellington Tour The City Council has worked out a number of pleasant routes you can walk by yourself. The Information Centre in Civic Square will give you a brochure that has the walks, a map of where you are going and descriptions of the places to visit.

Harbour Capital Bus Tours This group offers several bus tours of Wellington. All tours depart from the Information Centre in Civic Square, or you can arrange to be picked up from your hotel. All tours connect up with the Trust Bank Ferry at Queens wharf on which you can take a ride across the harbour. The ferry ride is about 30 minutes each way. Return Ferry fare (with bus tour) costs NZ$11.00 ($9.00 for students and senior citizens, $6.00 for children). Phone 0-4 499 1282, after hrs 0-4 387 8700. Faultline Tour: departs 9.00am, lasts 1 hour, NZ $15.00 ($12.00 for students and senior citizens, $7.50 for kids). Includes cable car ride. The Skyline Tour: departs 10.30am, lasts 1&1/2 hours, NZ $18.00 ($14.00 for students and senior citizens, $9.00 for children). Takes you to many of the cityUs best known sights. Includes cable car ride. Coastline Tour: departs 1.30pm. lasts 2&3/4 hours, NZ $21.00 ($16.00 for students and senior citizens, $10.00 for children). Takes you to many of the cityUs best known sights, as well as to lookout points and around parts of the harbour coastline. Includes cable car ride.

Wellington Heritage Highlights Tour Takes you around the historic landmarks of the city, including Old St. Pauls, the treaty of Waitangi, Katherine MansfieldUs birthplace etc. Departs daily from Wellington Railway Station, Bunny St, at 9.30am and 2pm. Harbour lunch cruise an optional extra (morning tour only). Free pick up and return from city hotels. Ph. 0-4 478 8315.

Wally HammondUs Scenic Tours This group offers several bus tours of Wellington and the surrounding areas. Takes you around Parliament, Old St Pauls cathedral, Rose gardens/Botanical Garden, National art gallery & museum, lookout points and bays. Wellington Twilight Tours See WellingtonUs faultine, skyline, sights and coastline by night. Departs 6.30pm, from the Information Center, Wakefield St. Returns 8.45pm, costs NZ$25. Kapiti Gold Coast Tour Departs daily 9.30am and 1.30pm, lasts about 3.5 hours, NZ $55.00. Includes Cashmere and great views of harbour, Tawa, Porirua, Plimmerton, Lindale farm (cheese making, home made ice cream, animal shows etc.) vintage car museum, chocolate factory, native bushlands, historic areas etc. Wairarapa, Palliser Bay Tour Departs 9.30am, returns approx. 5.30pm, NZ $85.00. Includes Rimutaka Ranges, rugged South coast of Wirarapa, sheep farms, fishing village of Ngawi, seal colony at Black Rock near Cap Palliser Lighthouse.

Trust Bank Ferry Trips Queens wharf to Days Bay, 30 minute trip, lovely view of the harbour. Up to 8 sailings daily. Timetable: 0-4 499 1273, office 499 1282.
